Hemel Old Town Market Booking Form and information pack

Thank you for your interest in the Hemel Old Town Market. The market is run by a group of local shop owners and is a community effort to drive foot-fall to the beautiful, historic Old Town and to bring back the Sunday market. We are a non-profit based organisation. Any money which is made from stall-holder fees will be used to directly promote future markets and the Old Town.

*Stall bookings are currently suspended until Spring 2021. If you are interested in a stall in 2021 please get in touch via the contact form, and we will let you know as soon as bookings open.



General Information

We do not intend to close the Old Town High Street for these markets. The public toilets in St Mary’s Square will be open on the day for the use of stall holders and the general public.

Your stall is not confirmed until we have received your booking form, payment into our account, and you have received an email from our admin team confirming your pitch. Please check your confirmation carefully. It will state the market date, location and pitch size of your stall. If you think the information we have given in the confirmation email is incorrect, please contact us within 3 working days.

We are producing posters and flyers to promote the event, if you would like flyers or a poster to display, please let us know. We are very grateful for the support of stall-holders and would ask that you help to promote the event by sharing the social media posts we will create to advertise the market and talking about your attendance at the event to your customers. Doing this will help us to make the market a thriving and viable monthly event with repeat footfall. This helps you to reach a new and diverse set of customers.

We regularly post ‘Stall Holder Highlights’ on our market facebook and instagram page. If you would like us to promote your attendance at the market, please look out for our emails requesting your information in the two weeks prior to the market date.

Date, time and location

  • Markets are held on the first Sunday of each month
  • The market runs from 12noon to 4.00pm
  • Your stall must be ready for inspection by 11:45am
  • Break down can begin no earlier than 4:00pm, stalls must be cleared by 5:00pm

Making Payment

Payment for your stall must be made at the time of booking, and in any event no later than two weeks prior to the market. If your payment is not received we will assume you no longer want the stall and offer it to someone else on our waiting list. You can transfer the fee direct to our bank account.

Please note that signing the application form indicates agreement and compliance with the following, please read carefully:

Our aim is to provide a ‘local’ shopping experience that will drive foot-fall to The Old Town.

We have worked hard to ensure that our market is Covid secure, and are asking our stallholders and visitors to maintain the following guidelines:

  • wear face-coverings throughout the day
  • provide hand sanitiser for customers on your stall
  • encourage customers to respect the 2m distancing rule
  • offer contactless payments where possible

We have created a thorough risk assessment for stallholders. Please follow this link to read the document. It contains important information which we are asking you to read and act upon.


Cancellation Policy 2 weeks prior to market - Full refund

Between one and two weeks - 50% refund

Less than one week or ‘no show’ on the day - No refund

Minimum age: Stall holders must be over 16 years to run a stall.

Pricing: food must be marked and priced according to legal requirements. Contact your local Trading Standards Office for more information.

Competition: we are running a market and inherent in this is the principle of customer choice. This means competition and change if the market is to stay fresh. While the quality of the product is an important driver, a real market also contains bargains. It is possible to have both; indeed it is essential to attracting customers.

Stall Location and Acceptance: no stallholder is allocated a permanent spot; location will be determined by the market committee. Stalls are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Clean Up: stallholders to remove all rubbish, unsold produce and leave the market clean.

Setting Up and Taking Down: the stallholders should cooperate with the market committee as to avoid congestion and maintain safety.

Product Usage Advice: the stallholders undertake to provide simple verbal or written cooking/usage advice, if applicable, for the products they supply.

Electrical Power: can sometimes be provided by prior arrangement but it is limited.

Food Business: all food stallholders will need to be registered as a Food Business.

Food Hygiene Certificate: all processed/prepared food sellers will need a Food Hygiene Certificate.

Food Hygiene: Produce must not be stored directly on the ground.

Legislation: the stallholder is responsible for complying with all laws and regulations regarding the production, preparation, labelling, display, storage and sale of goods. This includes ensuring that all game licences are current.

Insurance: Stall holders are required to have public liability and product insurance.

Packaging: stallholders should encourage shoppers to use reusable shopping bags, or to re-use carrier bags where practicable.

Additional information:

Stallholders are asked to come to the market zone from 10:00am (11.05am for stalls inside the Church) and must be ready for trading by 11:45am. No stall is allowed to pack up until the close of the market at 4:00pm unless this has been discussed and agreed beforehand. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by a member of our team and told which pitch has been allocated to you. Please ensure that no cars are kept within the market area. Once you have unloaded you must move your vehicle to the public parking area, please ask a member of staff.

Public Liability Disclaimer

All craft stall holders are strongly advised to be in possession of their own public liability insurance. If this is not possible for whatever reason, your customer will be covered for slips, trips or falls by our insurance but please note the following:

Any litigation or legal proceedings resulting from products sold at the market SHALL NOT be covered by our public liability umbrella insurance. This is purely for public safety within the market and CANNOT be extended to cover any outside products brought into the market zone by traders that may incur harm or ill health to any member of the public. Any theft or breakages CANNOT be covered by our insurance.

We are a learning organisation and the organisers reserve the right to amend these terms and conditions at any time.
